Spencer Eldridge renewed his passion for painting in oils in 2002 after spending time in the woods in upstate New York. He paints en plein air (in the open air) in order to capture the ever changing effects of light as it falls upon nature. Spencer’s work has been shown in galleries in Los Angeles, New York City, Northern Westchester and Upstate New York, and hangs in many public and private collections. He has exhibited alongside artists Jim Dine and Robert Rauschenberg in exhibitions in South West Florida, and has donated his work for several charity auctions. In addition to a lifelong pursuit of painting and drawing, he has worked as a set designer, graphic designer, actor and arts administrator. Spencer also spent 15 years as a touring, singer-songwriter and recording artist in power-pop and punk bands, The Panics and The Mutts. In 1997 He co-founded Captiva Arts (named after Captiva Island where he spent his childhood) with his wife, playwright Joanne Hudson, in order to house his varied artistic inclinations under one roof. Since then, he has produced and inspired young musicians, designed and constructed sets and worked both privately and in the public schools as a teacher of fine arts. Hi former band, The Panics, has enjoyed a recent resurgence of popularity among young punk-rockers in Germany and Scandanavia. He currently writes and performs his original music with his band The Contraptions and continues his journey into painting and drawing through the exploration of light and color. He holds a Bachelors of Art from SUNY Purchase and Masters Art/Teaching from Manhattanville.
